Goldman, a native of Philadelphia and a graduate of Long Island University, began his career as the company’s booker. He started working in east coast distribution for Embassy Pictures in New York City in 1978, and four years later, he was promoted to vice president of the division.
Mitchell Goldman joined New Line Cinema in 1986 while the company was establishing itself in Hollywood as a result of the success of the cult film “Nightmare on Elm Street.” Goldman directed the establishment of the studio’s distribution division, with the goal of releasing up to 12 movies year, at least five of which would be house productions. During his 16-year tenure as New Line’s chief of marketing and distribution, Goldman oversaw the release of major ’90s pop culture icons, including “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “The Mask,” “Rush Hour,” and “Boogie Nights.”
Mitchell’s Professional Life
Goldman expanded his business endeavours in the 2000s to include his cherished Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, opening a trio of sandwich shops in Los Angeles under the name South Street that ran until 2015.
According to Margolis of the company, which opened stores in Burbank and Hollywood, “Mitch was dissatisfied with the quality of cheesesteaks available in Los Angeles as a die-hard lover of all things Philadelphia.”
In the interim, Goldman worked as a consultant for companies like Miramax and movies like Charlize Theron’s Oscar-winning “Monster” after leaving New Line.Since his induction in 1986, he has actively participated in both the Motion Picture home and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Judy, Goldman’s wife of 51 years, his daughter Leslie, son Benjamin, and grandchildren Leo and Lucy all survive him.
