Who Was Ibrahim Munir?
Munir, who passed away in London at the age of 85, spent the majority of the previous 40 years in exile after serving two jail terms in Egypt in the 1950s and 1960s.
After widespread protests against its rule, Egypt’s military overthrew the once-powerful Islamist movement in 2013, and it has since been subjected to a harsh crackdown by the government. In 2012, the Islamist movement had won Egypt’s first free presidential election.

Turkey requested Egyptian opposition television networks that broadcast on its soil last year to temper their criticism of the Cairo government as it attempts to mend fences with Egypt.
Many of Egypt’s 102 million residents still support the Brotherhood, which over the years built up a network of charitable organizations, Munir said in an interview with Reuters in July.
The political discussion between Sisi’s government and a few opposition parties, he continued, was not a serious effort and would fail if the Brotherhood or other influential players were left out.
