The Eye of the Queen describes the life of Marius Thorndyke, the foremost expert on contact linguistics on Earth and the creator of the Contact Linguistics Institute (CLI), when he leaves for the planet Pe-Ellia at the request of the race who call it home.

Only a few inhabited planets, none of which have developed space flight, have been explored by Earth’s space programme because of this species, long suspected but unidentified. Thorndyke becomes emotionally attached to one of the Pe-Ellian residents during his visit and makes an effort to’meld’ with that entity. The effects on Earth and Pe-Ellia are enormous.
