Thorkild Simonsen (July 7, 1926 – September 4, 2022) was a Danish politician and Social Democrat. From 1982 to 1997, he was mayor of rhus, and from 1997 to 2000, he was Interior Minister of Denmark in the Cabinets of Poul Nyrup Rasmussen III and IV.
The career and life of Thorkild Simonsen
Simonsen served on the city council of rhus from 1966 to 1997 and as mayor from 1 January 1982 to 1997, when he resigned to become Minister of Interior Affairs. Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen had advocated for tighter immigration and refugee rules, which previous minister Birte Weiss refused to execute, prompting her to leave in protest.
Despite the fact that Simonsen was not a member of parliament, he was the problem solver Nyrup Rasmussen hoped would bring greater clarity to the government’s policy on immigration and refugee issues, issues on which the government had received significant criticism, particularly from the Danish People’s Party.

Thorkild Simonsen is survived by his wife of 68 years, Edny Simonsen, as well as two daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
