Who was Specs Howard?

Specs Julian “Jerry” Liebman, Howard’s birth name, was Julian on April 8, 1926. He spent thirty years in Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit, Michigan, as a radio pioneer.

In 1970, he established the Specs Howard School of Arts in Southfield, Michigan.

Early life and career of Specs Howard

In 1954, Liebman received a job offer from Cleveland. He then began using the moniker “Specs Howard.” Lawrence Technological University claims that when Liebman was a disc DJ in Cleveland, he gave his signature glasses the name “Specs Howard.” Liebman appeared on “The Martin and Howard Show” from 1962 through 1967.

In 1967, the Detroit market hired a radio announcer. After three years of market experience, Liebman founded Specs Howard School, a radio and television broadcasting-focused institution. The school changed throughout time and expanded its curriculum to include graphic design and digital media skills. On January 14, 2020, the media trade school celebrated its 50th birthday.

In 2021, the Specs Howard School of Media Arts closed its location in Southfield and amalgamated with Lawrence Tech. More than 15,000 former students of Specs Howard have entered the media industry since 1970.
