Who was O’Connell?
O’Connell, a sixth-year senior from Long Grove, Illinois, started for Purdue in 2021 and is now in his second season as a starter. He defeated Indiana with 290 throwing yards and two touchdowns.
O’Connell went to Lincolnshire, Illinois’ Stevenson High School. He passed for a school record 2,741 yards and 26 touchdowns in his lone season as a starter.
O’Connell enrolled at Purdue in 2017 as a walk-on. He didn’t participate in either 2017 or 2018, but in 2019 he appeared in six games and made three starts. Against Northwestern, he got his first career start and completed 34 of 50 passes for 271 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He completed 103 of 164 throws for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions overall that season. After three games, O’Connell, who had been named the starter for 2020, sustained an injury that would end his season.
With 88 of 136 passes completed, he ran for 916 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions. Jack Plummer’s backup in 2021, O’Connell eventually replaced him as the starter, completing 315 of 440 passes for 3,712 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He made the choice to forego the 2022 NFL Draft in favour of going back to Purdue.
Purdue’s match for Big Ten championship
Just days after the passing of his eldest brother Sean, Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell guided the Boilermakers to a victory over Indiana on Saturday.
Next weekend in Indianapolis, Purdue and No. 2 Michigan will compete for the Big Ten championship. After the game, O’Connell avoided speaking with reporters. Coach Jeff Brohm made a vague reference to something that upset his quarterback without going into more detail.
