Who is Raymond Briggs?
British illustrator, cartoonist, author, and CBE winner Raymond Redbards Briggs (18 January 1934 – 9 August 2022) was also a graphic novel author.
The Snowman has sold over 5.5 million copies worldwide, and Briggs has also written popular children’s books, Father Christmas and his Fungus The Bogeyman.
He was a critical and commercial success for both adults and children, but in the UK he is best known for his work on the wordless book The Snowman.
Briggs won the Kate Greenaway Medal of the British Library Association in 1966 and in 1973.

The early life of Raymond
Raymond Briggs was born in Wimbledon, London, to housewife Ethel Bowyer (1895–1971) and milkman Ernest Redbars Briggs (1900–1971). The couple married in 1930.
When he was five years old, he was moved to Dorset during World War II and his parents visited him frequently. After the war ended in 1945, he moved to Wimbledon.
He also pursued drawing comics from an early age while attending high school at the time, He Rutlish School. Despite his father’s attempts to dissuade him from this unprofitable hobby.
He then studied painting at the Wimbledon School of Art from 1949 until he graduated in 1953, and typography at the Central School of Art.
Raymond served as a National Service Conscript in the Royal Signal Corps, Catarick, from 1953 until 1955.
There he was promoted to draftsman.

Personal life of Raymond Briggs
His schizophrenic wife Jean died of leukemia two years after his parents passed away. They never gave birth to children.

Liz passed away from Parkinson’s illness in October 2015. Briggs continued working on his book authoring and illustration endeavors.

Raymond Briggs books
The 1973 children’s picture book Father Christmas is one of Briggs’ most famous works.
