Who Is Ray Guy?
Ray Guy was chosen in the first round of the NFL draught for the first time in league history in 1973, beginning a storied career that led to his 2014 induction as the first pure punter into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During his 14-year career, which was spent completely with the Raiders, the punter was chosen for three first-team All-Pro teams, made seven visits to the Pro Bowl, played in every game (a total of 207), and made it to three Super Bowls (XI, XV, XVIII).

He dropped 210 punts along the road, but his first three seasons aren’t included because the NFL didn’t start keeping track of the statistic until 1976. Guy was once called to as “the best that ever played that position” by legendary Raiders head coach John Madden, a judgement he came to only after getting over his initial shock that his team would use a first-round pick on the position.

Guy’s unique style of punting helped make the emphasis on “hang time” — the length of time a punt spends in the air — prominent and earned him a spot on the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. Guy was also selected for the 1970s All-Decade Team, the NFL All-Time Team, and the 1960–1984 AFL–NFL All-Star Team. The Ray Guy Award, given annually to the best punter in college football, is named in his honor.
He also played defensive back while attending Southern Miss, and his 1972 single-season total of eight interceptions still stands as the school record. He once held the record for the longest field goal made in college football (61 yards), and he still has the longest punting average in school history (44.7 yards).
The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s president, Jim Porter, said in a statement that Ray was “a warm, humble Southern gentleman who represented the game, the Raiders organization, and the Hall of Fame with decency and class at all times.” “He was a very talented athlete who could have played professionally in basketball or Major League Baseball.
