The Horse Whisperer’s bestselling author, Nicholas Evans, died at the age of 72.

United Agents said in a statement that the “much-loved” writer died on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack. “He had a full and happy life in his house on the banks of the Dart River in Devon,” the statement continued.

Evans’ longtime agent, Caradoc King of United Agents, confirmed the news to Deadline in a statement, saying Evans died of a heart attack on Tuesday, August 9.

“He lived a full and happy life in his Devon home on the banks of the Dart River.” He was adored and is survived by his wife Charlotte and four children, Finlay, Lauren, Max, and Harry,” the statement read.

Who was Nicholas Evans?

Nicholas Evans (26 July 1950 – 9 August 2022) was a novelist, screenwriter, television and film producer, and journalist from England.
Evans grew up in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, and attended Bromsgrove School before attending St. Edmund Hall in Oxford. He worked as a newspaper reporter and television screenwriter after serving in Africa with the organization Voluntary Service Overseas.

According to The New York Times, his novel The Horse Whisperer was the tenth best-selling novel in the United States in 1995. It is one of the best-selling books of all time, having sold 15 million copies. In the United Kingdom, The Horse Whisperer was included in the BBC’s Big Read, a 2003 survey aimed at determining the “nation’s best-loved book.” It was adapted into a film in 1998, directed by Robert Redford and starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Scarlett Johansson, and Sam Neill.

Evans disclosed on his personal website that he has committed to developing a film adaptation of his third novel, The Smoke Jumper.

Personal life of Nicholas Evans

Evans was married to musician Charlotte Gordon Cumming. He lived in Devon and had three children: a son, Max Evans, who is the head of geography at Preston Manor High School; a daughter, Lauren; and another son, Harry, from a relationship with Jane Hewland, the Network 7 and GamesMaster TV producer. 

Evans, Cumming, and several of their families were poisoned in September 2008 after eating deadly webcap mushrooms while on vacation in Scotland. They all needed dialysis, and Evans received a kidney transplant in 2011 using a kidney donated by his daughter.
