Tributes to Gil Banks

Following the tragic news, tributes to the enthusiastic runner and athlete were posted on social media.

Gil was initially introduced to Oz Hochman when he was a young boy and came to Israel from Scotland to attend summer camps. Hochman characterised Gil as a “wonderful and caring friend.”

Later, the two were classmates at a school in Israel where they both competed in triathlons and spent a lot of time together.

Even after leaving the service, despite the fact that our paths diverged slightly, Oz said, “there was a constant effort to maintain in touch.”

“You were a wonderful, kind buddy who gave and received love abundantly everywhere he went.

“Being a part of his journey, which was intended to finish so differently, was an honour and fun for me.

“I can’t believe I’m leaving you, but on the other hand, I know the memories of our time together will stay with me forever.

“My brother, I will always adore you.”

Eduardo Finkelstein, who knew Gil while he served as the town of Caesarea’s official triathlon coach, expressed his shock at the news.

“I remember Gil,” he continued, “with his wild red hair, fantastic smile, and (as) an incredible runner.

Gil and I shared at the time that neither of us spoke Hebrew very well, but we always managed to communicate in a humorous and engaging way. My English also improved thanks to him.

“I send the family my my sympathies at this difficult time. You have my unflinching support and my sincere sympathy.

In this difficult time, I wish you peace, comfort, courage, and a tonne of love.

Michael Sapir, a neighbour and friend, called Gil “a terrific young man,” “an excellent athlete,” who was “clever and ambitious.”
