Who Was Costa?
Costa sung alongside some of the biggest names in Brazilian music, like Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento, and her close friend Caetano Veloso, during the growing popular music scene in Brazil in the late 1960s.
Costa started her career as a professional singer in 1964. She was born on September 26, 1945, in Salvador, the state capital of Bahia. Before joining the Tropicália artistic movement, which combined Brazilian artistic traditions with foreign influences, she produced her debut album, Domingo, in 1967. Her 1969 self-titled solo debut is today regarded as a classic of Tropicalismo.
In a 2020 interview, she claimed, “I was born wanting to sing, wanting to be a singer.” “I always imagined myself to be one; I wanted it with all my heart.” Since the day I was born, I have known it.

Brazil experienced a nationwide outpouring of grief upon her passing. Singer-songwriter and former culture minister Gilberto Gil tweeted, “I’m deeply grieved and saddened by the passing of my “sister” @GalCosta.”
Her 16-year-old son is Costa’s only heir.
