
The patriarch of the Cignetti football family and former head coach of West Virginia and IUP, Frank Cignetti Sr., passed away this week at the age of 84, the James Madison University football team announced on Saturday.

Who was Frank Cignetti Sr.?
Former American football player and coach Frank Cignetti Sr. (October 8, 1937 – September 10, 2022) passed away on September 10. He compiled a career college football record of 199-77-1 while serving as the head football coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 1976 to 1979 and West Virginia University.
In 1990 and 1993, Cignetti guided the IUP Indians to the NCAA Division II Football Championship championship game. 2013 saw his induction as a coach into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Coaching career of Frank Cignetti Sr.
From 1976 through 1979, Cignetti served as the West Virginia Mountaineers head coach. His record at West Virginia is 17–27, although NCAA Division II football was where he found the most success. From 1986 through 2005, he led the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) to a 182-50-1 record. In 1987, the Indians competed in the Division II postseason for the first time under Cignetti.
When he retired in 2005, his 15 playoff victories were second-best, while his 28 postseason games set a Division II coaching record. He won the Division II coach of the year award in 1991. His teams were the top Division II team in the eastern United States, winning 10 Lambert Cups in all.

From 1985 to 1987, Frank Jr. Cignetti played football for his father at IUP. Former offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams, Cignetti Jr. On January 21, 2011, his son Curt was named the head coach of IUP. Curt had previously spent four years as Alabama’s wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.
From 2016 to 2018, Curt was the head coach of Elon University. In December 2018, he was hired as the eighth head coach of James Madison.

Prior to the Backyard Brawl last week, which was a game that connected the family’s past with Curt playing for and Frank Sr. coaching for West Virginia and all three coaching for Pitt, Frank Cignetti Jr. spoke about his family’s history and connections to Pittsburgh.

On Saturday, Pitt will play home to Tennessee at 3:30 p.m., and James Madison will play host to Norfolk State at 4 p.m. Both Frank Cignetti Srsons .’s will serve as head coaches. No one is certain who will coach. At 6 o’clock, IUP will be in East Stroudsburg.
