From 1992 to 2003, the native of Athens served as the TBI’s director. He oversaw the Tennessee Highway Patrol as well, and eventually assisted the Cleveland and Chattanooga police forces.

Larry Wallace career
- Started working for the Athens Police Department in 1964.
- 1967: Selected to become a state trooper
- 1973: Awarded the TBI’s Special Agent rank
- After taking a leave of absence from the TBI in 1976 to return to Athens, he was twice elected sheriff of McMinn County.
- 1979: The Tennessee Sheriff’s Association honours him as “Sheriff of the Year.”
- Returned to the TBI in 1980
- Promotion to Special Agent in Charge of the Criminal Investigation Division in 1984
- 1987: Colonel and Commanding Officer of the Tennessee Highway Patrol appointed
- 1988: Appointed as the Tennessee Department of Safety’s deputy commissioner.
- 1992 saw the appointment of Dr. Wallace to a six-year term as Director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation by Governor Ned Ray McWherter, making him the top law enforcement official in the state.
- Started working for the Athens Police Department in 1964.
- 1967: Selected to become a state trooper
- 1973 – Awarded Special Agent status with the 1994 – Led the TBI to become the third state criminal investigation agency in the United States to achieve worldwide accreditation from the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
- Governor Don Sundquist reappointed Dr. Wallace to the TBI’s directorship for a second six-year term in 1998.
- 2003 – During Governor Phil Bredesen’s administration, retired as TBI Director
- 2004 – Appointed to the TWU faculty to create and instruct the criminal justice programme. He served as a consultant for former Chattanooga mayor Bob Corker. Though Steve Parks ultimately won the role, he was later given the chief position.
- 2005 – I became the Vice President for External Affairs and a member of the university’s executive committee.
- Changing roles in 2007 to become the Vice President for Administration
- Senior Vice President for Administration since 2010
- Judicially chosen to serve as the McMinn County Grand Jury’s foreman from 2014 to the present
- 2015 – Retired from TWU; employed by the Cleveland City Council as a special consultant
- Gained independence as a law enforcement consultant in 2016 and received an honorary doctorate from Tennessee Wesleyan University’
- 2017 to the present: Appointed to the TWU Board of Trustees; hired by Athens Insurance as a member of the agency staff.
Wallace directed the TBI’s international accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, oversaw the building of the organization’s new headquarters, and helped the TBI become just the third state criminal investigative agency to do so.
Wallace was a pioneer in the creation of the wildly popular TBI Most Wanted programme as well.
Wallace subsequently said, “It was severely needed because we didn’t have an agency big enough to go after all the fugitives.

Following a NewsChannel 5 investigation, Wallace ordered TBI investigators to work with the FBI during his term to look into no-bid contracts given to associates of the governor who had reappointed Wallace to his position.
John Stamps, a friend of Sundquist, and a different state official would later be sent to federal prison.
For twenty years, Wallace and Sundquist did not speak to one another.
