World famous Versailles restaurant
In 1971, Cuban-born Valls opened Versailles, a restaurant that is well-liked by both local Cuban exiles and tourists for its food and ties to anti-Castro politics.
Valls’ dream of a Cuban hub began to take shape with the opening of Versailles Restaurant 51 years ago.
Who was Felipe Valls?
His vision was to establish a location where families could eat well at reasonable pricing. The Calle Ocho neighbourhood in Little Havana was not yet the thriving commercial hub it is today. However, Felipe noticed that Miami was changing rapidly, both in terms of its population and its variety, and he anticipated that this area would become a focal point of the city.
The time and money invested creating and fostering Versailles paid off, just as Valls had intended. Numerous interested Miami residents as well as Cuban clients who were as hungry for nostalgia as they were for food arrived. He had no idea how popular this Eighth Street eatery would be; people came from all over the world to eat there. In due course, he started Versailles Bakery.
Cafe Versailles, a Cuban coffee and pastry stand that takes inspiration from the “Ventanita” and bakery, is an extension of the Versailles brand. The Miami International Airport currently has five Cafe Versailles kiosks.
Valls believed that Versailles’ success and significance were a result of his passion and commitment, as well as those of his staff, the visitors, and the constantly shifting dynamics of the City of Miami.
