Who Is Dave Butz?
Butz, a first-round selection in 1973, played with Washington for 14 seasons for the most of his 16-year career. He was a member of the team that won Super Bowls XVII and XXII and was selected to the first team of the All-Pros in 1983 in addition to the second team in 1984.
The team sent a statement on social media saying they were “heartbroken by the loss of Washington Legend Dave Butz, a two-time Super Bowl champion and member of our Ring of Fame and 90 Greatest list.” We are sending Dave’s family and friends our sincere sympathies.
Butz, a defensive tackle, started his career with the St. Louis Cardinals after being selected fifth overall out of Purdue in the 1973 draught. Before being moved to Washington in return for two first-round picks and a second-round pick, he played for the team for two seasons.
Dave Butz developed into one of the top defensive linemen of the decade after joining the Commanders. He accumulated 59.5 sacks in 14 seasons with Washington, which is still third-most in the team’s history. Over the course of his 16-year career, he missed just four games. He was also named one of Washington’s 90 all-time greatest players and was chosen for the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade squad.
He was an All-Big Ten selection and a finalist for the Lombardi Award during his senior year in college at the Boilermakers in 1972. This was prior to his NFL career. 2014 saw his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

1986: Saw the sad news that DT Dave Butz has passed away at age 72. He was so prominent during the #NYGiants v Washington battles in the 80s as the Skins were a powerhouse & then the Giants matched them. I always think of that battered helmet from the wars in the trenches. RIP
