Who Was Coy Gibbs?
Coy was a former driver and assistant NFL coach. He was one of Joe Gibbs’ two kids, the Pro Football Hall of Fame coach. J.D. Gibbs, Joe Gibbs’ other son, also passed away in 2019 at the age of 49 following a fight with a neurological condition.
He spoke about his son Ty, who had recently experienced a contentious week on the racetrack, after Ty, one of his four children, won the Xfinity championship on Saturday night when he was present at Phoenix Raceway.
Coy is survived by his wife Heather, and his children Elle, Ty, Case, and Jett. The No. 23 Toyota of 23XI Racing was slated to be driven by Ty Gibbs in the NASCAR Cup Series championship race on Sunday. However, crewmen removed Gibbs’ seat and replaced it with inserts for Xfinity Series driver Daniel Hemric, who remained in the Phoenix region after the race on Saturday, as word travelled throughout the NASCAR garage on Sunday morning.
Later, it was revealed by 23XI Racing that Hemric would take Ty’s place in the Sunday race.
In 2015, after brother J.D. started having issues with brain function, Coy was promoted to the position of COO at JGR. Years earlier, he managed the JGRMX motorcycle racing team. Prior to that, he played linebacker at Stanford and worked as an offensive quality control assistant with the Washington Commanders (2004–2007).
He competed in racing in the early 2000s, starting 97 times in the Truck Series and Xfinity Series of NASCAR. But Coy’s inability to produce in the 2003 Xfinity season contributed to his entry into the NFL in 2004, when his father Joe returned to Washington as a coach after an 11-year hiatus.
Joe Gibbs, who turns 82 later this month, is also honoured for his work as a team owner in the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Joe was getting ready to see driver Christopher Bell compete for the team’s sixth Cup Series championship when news of Coy’s passing broke early on Sunday morning.
With longtime sponsor M&M’s and driver Kyle Busch both leaving the team after Sunday’s race, JGR has already had a turbulent year. When Ty, 20, dislodged teammate Brandon Jones to win a race last week at Martinsville Speedway, he immediately became a lightning rod.
Now that a second son has passed away, Joe Gibbs will have to decide who in the family would be most suited to lead the squad when he is ready to retire.
