According to Thoroughbred Daily News, Penna, who was battling dementia, passed away peacefully in a Boca Raton, Florida, memory care facility close to his house.

During the 1990s, trainer Luis Carvajal Jr. galloped graded stakes winners Via Borghese, Auntie Mame, and Nine Keys for the younger Penna in the United States. Even after Carvajal started his training, Penna continued to be his tutor.
