Who was Penna Jr. ?

In North America, where he made 3,370 starts before winning 586 of them, Argentinean-born Penna, who was born in Buenos Aires, helped his runners earn more than $24 million from 1980 to 2021.

Only Time, who placed third in a maiden claiming event at Gulfstream Park in November of last year, was his most recent starter.

Career prime years

Despite Penna’s recent training in Florida, his stable enjoyed success across North America, especially during his prime years from 1981 to 2011.

With superstars like Christmas Past, A Phenomenon, Cool, Silver Voice, Laugh and Be Merry, Nine Keys, Perfect Arc, Auntie Mame, and Diamondrella, he won grade 1 races during that period. Christmas Past by Cynthia Phipps and Laugh and Be Merry by Pin Oak Farm were recognised as winners.

Penna as mentor

The younger Penna first worked as his father’s assistant before beginning his training in America in 1980. He started his overseas training in Spain in 1975, according to Turf Diary, and won his first race there. He also topped Spanish training statistics in 1977 and 1978.

During the 1990s, trainer Luis Carvajal Jr. galloped graded stakes winners Via Borghese, Auntie Mame, and Nine Keys for the younger Penna in the United States. Even after Carvajal started his training, Penna continued to be his tutor.

According to Carvajal, “He was like a father figure.” “I had a good horse named Imperial Hint, and he always answered my questions,” the rider said.

Carvajal claimed that when he was younger, Penna helped him obtain the necessary paperwork for employment in the United States.

He said, “He was a classy gentleman.

According to Thoroughbred Daily News Ruth, his wife, and Elinor Penna, his stepmother, are left behind by Penna.

Radio announcer Steve Byk tweeted that Penna was respected on social media in the hours following his passing “a perfect gentleman and skilled rider. All who knew him will sincerely miss him. I’m thinking of Ruth and Elinor.”
