The market is located more than a mile (two kilometers) south of the city’s core. Levon Sardaryan, a spokesman for the mayor of Yerevan, reported that rescuers were working hard to extricate victims from the wreckage. According to him, the explosion occurred near a storage facility for pyrotechnics.
