According to the Department of National Defence, Canadian Armed Forces member Capt. Eric Cheung passed away on Saturday in Baghdad, Iraq.

The press release went on to say that he passed away due to “non-operational related circumstances,” i.e., circumstances unrelated to the operation he was conducting in the area.
No other information will be provided until the inquiry was finished, according to the announcement, which stated that “an investigation into the circumstances of this occurrence is presently underway.”
Who Was Eric?
Cheung worked as an operations officer with the Winnipeg-based 38 Canadian Brigade Group Headquarters.
As an executive officer for the directorate of strategic communications for the combined joint task force, Operation Inherent Resolve, he was stationed in Baghdad.
According to a press statement, Captain Cheung was assisting the Canadian Armed Forces in supporting the Global Coalition as part of Operation IMPACT.
Operation IMPACT, which started as a worldwide coalition to combat Daesh in Syria and Iraq, has since expanded to include a mission to create the circumstances for security and stability in Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon.
Prior to Remembrance Day on November 11 and in the midst of mounting concerns about the sufficiency of the support systems intended for soldiers and veterans, Cheung passed away.
