Who Was Alice Davis?
Alice Estes, who was born on March 26th, 1929, in Escalon, California, fell in love with art at a young age. She was given a scholarship to study costume design at the renowned Chouinard Art Institute. Her initial plan was to study animation, but the waitlist was too long, so she settled on costume design. She did, however, enrol in a few animation courses there, which is how she got to know Disney animator Marc Davis, who was a nighttime instructor at Chouinard. Alice and Marc remained in touch after graduation.
Alice’s courtship started over the phone while she was working as a designer at the Beverly Vogue & Lingerie House in Los Angeles, when Marc asked her to help create costumes for live-action reference model Helene Stanley to assist the animators with their most difficult picture to yet, Sleeping Beauty. Although the movie wouldn’t be released until 1959, Alice and Marc were married in 1956 because they couldn’t keep their relationship a secret for much longer. While Marc Davis continued to animate and eventually got sucked into theme park design, Alice Davis soon found herself working at Disney on TV shows and live-action movies.
Walt Disney personally chose Alice Davis in 1963 to collaborate with Disney Legend Mary Blair on an attraction she was creating for the 1964 New York World’s Fair. More than 150 outfits from different nations were needed for the production. It’s a little world was transported to Disneyland and replicated at Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland thanks in large part to Alice’s trademark designs. The outfits worn by the characters in General Electric’s Carousel of Progress were also impacted by Alice.
Despite Alice and Marc’s retirement in 1978, they continued to work as consultants for Disney over the years and supported CalArts, which replaced the Chouinard Art Institute. Over the years, Alice Davis attended many Disney fan gatherings. She became a fan favourite right away owing to her friendly disposition and her willingness to spend time with them. Marc Davis died in 2000, but she became a Disney Legend in 2004 after he did. In 2012, Alice was also given a window next to her deceased husband on Main Street, America at Disneyland. “Small World Costume Co. – Alice Davis – Star Sewer” is written on it. 22 years later, she has reunited with her spouse in the stars.
