About Al-Azhar University
In Cairo, Egypt, there is a public institution called Al-Azhar University, often known as “the University of (the honourable) Al-Azhar.” It is known as the most distinguished institution for Islamic studies and is affiliated with Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in Islamic Cairo. It is also the oldest institution of higher learning in Egypt that awards degrees.
Al-Azhar is in charge of a national network of schools with about two million students in addition to higher education. Over 4,000 educational institutions in Egypt were connected to the university as of 1996.
The Fatimid Caliphate established this centre of Islamic learning in 970 or 972. Its students studied the Qur’an and Islamic law in-depth, as well as logic, grammar, rhetoric, and how to calculate the moon phases. It is now the world’s foremost centre for the study of Arabic and Islam. Non-religious subjects were added to its curriculum in 1961.
Only the Egyptian National Library and Archives are thought to be more significant than its library in Egypt.
The H.H. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum project to preserve Al Azhar scripts and publish them online (the “Azhar Online Project”) was launched in May 2005 by Al-Azhar in collaboration with a Dubai information technology company, IT Education Project (ITEP), in order to eventually publish online access to the library’s entire rare manuscripts collection, which consists of about seven million pages of content.
