Shortly after 1.30 pm on Saturday, the victim was struck by a tram on Kings Way near York Street in South Melbourne.
According to a Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman, firefighters helped remove the victim out from beneath the tram and into the care of Ambulance Victoria within three minutes of arriving on the site.
The pedestrian has not yet been officially identified and passed away at the site.
Ambulance Victoria and Yarra Trams workers received assistance from Victoria Police and Fire Rescue Victoria in removing people from the tram.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said that crews arrived on the scene in three minutes to assist in getting the person out from under the tram and into the care of Ambulance Victoria.

On Saturday afternoon, Route 58 trams were diverted away from the incident.
